Made for the PixelCRAM game jam. Vanguard is a Arcade/Simulation game putting you in a cockpit of a massive mech, as you take on a battalion of tanks, Jets, buggies, and other mechs. The goal is to survive 7 minutes behind enemy lines, destroying what you can without getting destroyed yourself.
I have always been fascinated by the early attempts for Psudo-3D in NES and Even Atari. Games like Battlezone (Atari), Spitfire Attack (Atari), Z Gundam Hot Scramble (NES), & Top Gun (NES). They were impressive considering the limitations at the time. Vanguard was inspired by games like this, I wanted to use modern dev tools to fully realize what these games could have been like.
The goal wasn't to recreate a 3D environment, but rather emulate a feel of one.The sprites were all done in the Fusion 2.5 editor and really just boils down to some cleaver math, sprite scaling, and good old fashion outside the box thinking. The other main goal was to emulate the size and feel of piloting a giant humanoid mech, not just a big tank. I wanted to emulate the scale, and build a game where it feels like you have arms that move and act independently from the body.
